Final presentation on the campaign for our company
SPAN 3160 - Spanish for International Business

Our final presentation was on the campaign we worked on all semester on the company or service we created. We were given a country and surrounded our campaign on the business side of the Spanish language. We learned business terms, business etiquette, how to create advertisements to attract customers, and how to focus on a specific target audience. I was given the country Spain which was perfect as that’s where I studied abroad. My company was called “Vivendo Abroad” and I chose to base my headquarters in Madrid because of the high tourism that would make the service have the success of many applicants. My service is a program similar to the CIEE teaching abroad program. I wanted to create my own rendition that wasn’t solely based on attracting applicants online, but having an in-person headquarters where mentors would be stationed inside and outside to recruit and educate those interested. I believed having the interpersonal connection with potential teachers would help make the program a viable reality to students, as well as answer any questions that are better explained face-to-face. My target audience was those currently studying abroad in Spain, those approaching their study abroad, those passing by the headquarters, and recent graduates from their study abroad and university. I had a goal of sending out our advertisements to directors of LIH and LIB programs at other universities to forward to students in those departments. This project was important to my future career because I plan to be a part of the CIEE program and I believe that having a program that fits the aspiration you want does wonders with making the dream a reality.

A paper about the identities within cultures
OLPD 3332 - Study abroad course from University of Minnesota

We were asked to write a paper about the identities present within cultures and I wanted to base mine on the identities within Spain. I used the real stories of people I encountered during my study abroad as I met people from various cultures such as Moroccan, Senegalese, Italian, France, etc. The point of the paper was to understand other cultural identities and to relate them to ourselves. The required reading that prefaced this paper was about Cultural Competence, which is the focus of seeing a culture through a white perspective as this perspective silences the experience of those not in the majority. It was a profound topic as it spoke on how we view cultural identities from a different perspective in different races and we need to view these differences through the lens of the minority. This paper and research was important to me as it broadcasted respecting and valuing other perspectives and worldviews without value neutrality, investigating differences resulting from power and privilege, and acknowledging painful realities about oneself, one’s social group, and society. This resonates so strongly with my career aspiration as working internationally and within healthcare, you interact with people from all identities, cultures, and perspectives and it’s important to have a multicultural worldview to better serve and understand.

Cultural Interview Project
FOST 3517: Women in Spain

Our final project was to interview a family of women from three different generations to get a glimpse of how the world for women in Spain has been shaped and changed over time. My group mates and I found a family of four generations: Great grandmother, grandmother, mom, and daughter. We interviewed the family to better understand the gender norms and roles as they’ve progressed from the Franquismo era where the nation was ruled by a dictator and the Catholic Church to now where women are more liberated. It was fascinating to witness a great-grandmother and grandmother freely talking about abortion after living in an era of the belief of no contraception, while most American women of the same generation shutter at such a topic. As an LIH major, women’s history directly impacts women’s health as women’s health has been belittled to solely reproductive health yet there are so many restrictions placed on all facets of our reproductive health. The results of this project was that the core of womanhood in society was oppressed, then progressed, overcame, and hopefully one day can eliminate the inferiority of our gender.

A paper about the identities within cultures
IDS 3970 - Study abroad course from University of Minnesota

Our professor wanted us to write about what stood out to us after watching the documentary, “La Gran Familia”. The film was about how the Catholic church and Franquismo era played a major role in the early days of the Spanish family. The movie explained how the Industrial era sparked womens’ liberation as they were allowed to work, allotted contraceptives, and allowed to leave gender roles. Something that relates to my career is how the documentary showed how the birth rate changed in Spain during the Industrial revolution. The Spanish birth rate is one of the lowest in Europe as the family structure of the “Gran Familia” is no longer feasible due to the economy, low salaries, and tight job market; leaving the average Spanish family to only have two children. Relating to my career is that Spain’s birth rate is due to economic difficulties while the United States has low rates due to infant and maternal mortality. I am passionate about making an impact in lowering the infant mortality rate, so it’s uplifting to see it doesn’t always have to be a devastating reasoning behind a low birth rate.

Scientific article on the healthcare system in Venezuela
SPAN 4180 - Technical Spanish for Health Management Professionals

Our final exam was to write a scientific article on the healthcare system in a Latin American country we were assigned. I was given Venezuela and I spent the semester gathering information from various research articles to understand the health system of Venezuela, how it’s organized and who it’s organized by, the disadvantages and advantages, and what can be done to improve it. I researched the model of Venezuela’s healthcare system and noticed the difference it had from the United States healthcare system as well as the Colombian healthcare system. The biggest difference was how it was paid and what services it offered. The healthcare system of Venezuela is a “seguro social de salud” which entails employers covering insurance to private organizations  serving  as a third party to pay the administrators in medical services. I learned so much researching for this article, especially with the destruction of the Venezuelan government that has led to the dismantling of a once prosperous healthcare system. Similar to American history, changes in governmental leadership repressed the progress made to healthcare where it’s harder for the majority of people to receive treatment, especially those who are low-income. This relates directly to my career as in healthcare, we will serve many patients who are low-income and in need of affordable healthcare. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a revision to how healthcare is allotted that benefited millions, as well as Medicaid, but the government needs to not stand in the way of Americans having their right to healthcare.

Global health research paper
HLTH 4700 - Global Health

For this global health research paper, we were instructed to choose a country on the poverty list. I chose Morocco because it held a special place in my heart at the time and I was eager to learn more about their health as a nation. We based our research on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were put in place as a means of levels every country should meet or attempt to achieve to improve overall health world-wide. The issue with the SDGs is that low-income and middle-income countries are at a significant disadvantage of achieving these goals whether it’s due to political issues or economic hardships. Some of the 17 SDGs are no poverty, good health and well-being, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, and quality education. We wrote what SDGs had the most impact on our country and what sequential SDGs can be benefited as a result. Essentially, we had to determine which SDGs could make a chain reaction to improve the most important SDG: SDG 3 Good health and well-being. I learned how instances such as gender inequality, race inequalities, access or lack of education, clean water and sanitation, and even work opportunities directly impact health. This opened my eyes towards my career as many aren’t educated in knowing how intricate health is and how it’s all intertwined. I developed the soft skills of research and understanding how to interpret an SDG and what needs to be done to improve it or understand what’s inhibiting it from being improved.
